| This is the 1944-1946 diary and story of James Reding, a young sailor in the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Fergus, APA 82, in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the final months of World War II. During that period of time he participated in the Okinawa and Philippine campaigns, the initial occupation of Japan, the Magic Carpet, and the preparations for the Operations Crossroads atomic bomb experiments at Bikini Atoll. As a former crewmember on an Amphibious Personnel Attack Troop Transport, Jim dedicates this book to the officers and men of America's Amphibious Forces and their support vessels. With honor and distinction they carried our military personnel across vast expanses of seas and oceans of the world and landed them onto hostile shores. |
